With the academic year coming close to an end we are proud to have supported Fife College for another consecutive year.
In March, fourteen first year students, from Fife College were invited to Havelock International HQ, at Mitchelston Industrial Estate for a live tour of our factory floor. The tour included visiting different departments with an introduction to our machinery capabilities with explanations on operations, as well as talks on common techniques and fittings used. Several Q&A sessions were held throughout the day to provide our visitors with a greater understanding on the manufacturing industry.
To support the HND ‘Furniture Design and Make’ students further, and encourage more youth into the industry, Havelock also donated 12 sheets of 18mm double-sided 3050 x 1200mm MFMDF to the College.
This product will be used for a live brief set by a local High School. The brief called ‘Graded Unit’, challenges the student to design a bespoke table and/or chair combo that allows for flexible seating arrangements without having to physically lift chairs and tables from an established layout. Each Student will produce a minimum of eight design solutions with one final design solution being fully explored and developed, with the production of a 1:5 scale model of your finished prototype.
Any remaining MFMDF will be utilised on an additional course unit ‘Experimental Techniques’, which request the student to design an item of furniture from one sheet of manufactured board only.
We wish all the students well as they prepare for submitting their final projects by the end of the month, we look forward to seeing the finished outcomes.
